This refers to the consolidation and cleansing of data from various sources such as databases, apps, services, files etc. The combined data is then presented in a unified view that can in turn be sourced for further processing upstream for master data management, data warehousing, business intelligence and data analytics. The goal is to make sure the timely availability of the information that is actionable, accurate and consistent. One very common type of data integration is an ETL (Extract, Transform and Load). This, as the name suggests, is a practice that involves the extraction of information from the source systems, this information is then transformed into the expected format before it’s loaded into the target application data store.
ETL is used for data migration into data marts/data warehouses or any other application that is dependent on the data made available by ETL.
